Around Munich

Hiking

Munich is always worth a visit. However, it is not only the city itself, with its many sights such as the English Garden or the famous Nymphenburg Palace, which makes for amazing discovery tours. On a clear day the magnificent view of the Alps gives a pretty good idea of what is waiting beyond the metropolis’ borders. The countryside around Munich is a magnificent area for long walks and hiking expeditions. For all those who would like to explore some of the lakes, forests and mountains near Munich, we have put together the best hiking tips for you.

Hiking With a View

Bruennstein, Jochberg and Jaegerkamp are just some of the names of Munich’s local mountains (“Hausberge“). In the immediate vicinity of the Bavarian capital, there is a hiking route for everyone – from beginners to experienced climbers. In addition to the rural idyll and the soothing tranquility, a hike to the summits of the “Hausberge” will be rewarded with a magnificent view across the vast mountain range of the Prealps. An active hiking tour in a class of its own.

Alpaca Tour near Munich

Alpacas are the perfect companions on your hike in the Munich area. With their loyal eyes and calm charisma, the “camels of the Andes“ create a very special atmosphere. Past wild meadows and hidden trails, along rushing streams and over gentle hills, your alpaca tour will be an experience you want to remember forever.

Discovering the Lakes Near Munich

Lake Starnberg, Lake Ammer, Lake Tegernsee, to name only the most famous lakes around Munich…. Every one of the Prealps’ lakes offer a huge selection of hiking trails close to the water. Sometimes directly along the shore, sometimes slightly elevated with a beautiful view. Combine the water with the trees of the nearby forests and you get unbeatable recreation during your hiking holiday in Munich.

Hiking with Children

If you are looking for an opportunity to take a hike with your children, you will be very happy with Munich and the surrounding areas. There is a multitude of routes that can be explored with the whole family. One example being the mountain “Blomberg“ where you and your kids can find one of Germany’s largest climbing forests. Or how about a hike up “Schliersberg“ which you will be subsequently rewarded for by a downhill ride on the summer toboggan run?

Munich’s „Way of St. James”

After a few relaxing days in the city, you can set out invigorated on a hike along Munich’s “Way of St. James“. En route between Munich and Lake Constance, you will walk along churches, monasteries, impressive landscape, and – for your well-deserved breaks – some beer gardens. The entire route is designed for endurance hikers, but when divided into several stages, less experienced hikers can also enjoy the route.

Hikes Along River Isar

If you visit Munich during summertime, you will not want to miss a relaxing day at the river Isar. In addition to sunbathing at the riverbank and splashing around in the water, the Isar is also a great hiking route leading out of the city. If you have the stamina, it will take you all the way to the tranquil spa town of Bad Tölz. Along the way, you will encounter the Baierbrunn climbing garden, the Isar Valley Observatory and some very rare animal species in the wildlife resort “Isarauen“.
