Christmas markets Munich - Your guide to the festive season

Although Munich’s city center is known for being particularly lively around Christmas, you can also spend the holiday season in Bavaria’s capital in a very contemplative way. You just have to know when and where. And let’s be honest: In good company, between the scent of gingerbread and the glow of lights, it quickly becomes cozy regardless. That is why we would like to introduce you to the most famous and important Christmas markets in the Bavarian capital today – each with its own special features, of course.

Schwabing Christmas markets at Münchner Freiheit

Our first tip on the Munich Christmas market list is only a few minutes away from Schwabinger Wahrheit. This is a big advantage, especially on your way home. So if you would like to stay a little bit longer – typically with a mulled wine or two in hand –it is going to be easy. Even without that inner heater, it is fun to just linger! The creative handicrafts, for which the Christmas market at Münchner Freiheit is known, hold many special treasures that are rarely found elsewhere. A daily changing music program also attracts many people.

From Schwabinger Wahrheit it takes you 5 minutes to walk to the Christmas market.

Christmas Market at the Chinese Tower

Munich’s Christmas markets offer so many delicious treats that, to stay fit, you’ll be happy to get there on foot. So, we recommend combining a visit to our next Christmas market tip with an extended winter walk. With a little luck, the first snow has already fallen in December, which turns the English Garden into a white wonderland. The Christmas Market at the Chinese Tower is located quite prominently in the city’s famous garden. Enjoy warm punch and roasted almonds under the same old chestnut trees that provide valuable shade for beer garden visitors in summer.

From Schwabinger Wahrheit it takes you 20 minutes to get to the Christmas market. Alternatively, you can take the bus (7 minutes).

Munich’s Christmas Market on Marienplatz

Munich’s Christmas Market on Marienplatz is not only the oldest and largest Christmas market in the Bavarian capital, but also the one with the most diverse range of food and drink, clothing accessories and typical Munich specialties. Quite a few people find a charming gift here shortly before Christmas Eve that is simply “a little bit different“. Regular concerts round off the festive atmosphere and when you leave Marienplatz, the pre-Christmas feeling is not over yet. Our tip: Walk along Kaufinger Straße until you reach Karlsplatz. Every year, the popular Munich Ice Magic is set up there – an ice skating rink with gastronomy for young and old.

Medieval Christmas Market on Wittelsbacherplatz

The Wittelsbach dynasty took over Bavaria in the High Middle Ages and was able to maintain its reign until 1918. Thus, the noble family naturally also left its mark on the city of Munich. Many buildings are reminders of the time of rule. Every year in the pre-Christmas period you can let yourself be taken back to this time. Enjoy a suckling pig as it was prepared in those days and drink a mug of mead with it. You can also buy replica handicrafts, kitchen utensils and collectibles.

Tollwood Winterfestival

If you seek something out of the ordinary during the pre-Christmas season, we can recommend the Tollwood Winter Festival. At the Theresienwiese, the site of the Oktoberfest, you will find cultural diversity and a special focus on sustainability. Accordingly, there is organic mulled wine, culinary delights from all over the world and fair-trade specialties at this unique Christmas market. Artists from near and far present their handicrafts in the famous “Market of Ideas“.
